19 Nahanni

We had to drive past the turnoff for the Nahanni Road so we could fill up with gas at Watson Lake, home of many signs and a visitor center with wifi! Oh, I was getting phone coverage these days because I turned on international roaming before I left Juneau. At the visitor center, I asked about the Nahanni Road, what kind of condition it was in, how bad a drive. The visitor center information agent hemmed and hawed a bit, and I said, “I just don’t want to have to drive another road like the north Canol.” “Oh, if you can drive that one then the Nahanni will be a breeze!” And then she told us about porcupines eating all the plywood from people’s cabins because they like the feeling of it on their teeth. And a bunch of other cool stuff.

Despite the early rain, this was an amazing drive too, and ended at a Tungsten mine and hot springs. But we couldn’t find the hot springs. They were probably on mine property. And we were back in the Northwest Territories again.

On the way out, we drove through fires again. Old smokey ones, not flamy ones. A Yukonder asked if we’d seen many hunters up the road, and I had to say only 3 or 4 pair. May have been a little early yet.
